The below list is a collection of humanitarian WASH partner resource websites, key emergency WASH platforms, learning, academia and other technical resources part of our regular screening. Please share any further platforms to globalwashcluster@unicef.org.

Emergency WASH Knowledge Portal

The Emergency WASH Knowledge Portal is a comprehensive capacity development and decision support tool consisting of three distinct online platforms for the three WASH pillars: water supply, sanitation and hygiene. It systematically disaggregates water supply and sanitation technologies, as well as hygiene components, tools and approaches into their functional components, clarifies terminology and provides guidance on identifying the most appropriate WASH solutions in a given context for all relevant response phases of an emergency. The individual sub-platforms can be accessed by clicking on the corresponding section above.

SaniHUB

The Humanitarian Sanitation Hub is a joint sector effort of Global WASH Cluster (GWC) members bringing together all available knowledge on planning and implementing sanitation and faecal sludge management in emergencies on one single platform. It enables and guides humanitarian WASH practitioners with easy access to contextualised and relevant guidance, resources, tools and further support services and aims to continuously fill existing knowledge gaps for improved humanitarian sanitation services.

UNICEF (United Nations Children’s Fund)

Unicef is dedicated to providing humanitarian assistance to children and their communities by providing assistance for education, nutrition, healthcare, and WASH related needs. Unicef is also the lead agency over the Global WASH Cluster (GWC), the primary coordination mechanism for humanitarian WASH responses. Resources include Unicef sanctioned reports and guidance, as well as, Unicef deployment kits, e-learning guides, and insight into several cross-cutting themes like child protection and disaster risk reduction (DRR).

USAID/OFDA

The Global Waters site includes links to other organizations and networks relevant to emergency WASH, as well as, hosting an extensive library of reports, documents, and guidance. Under the operation of United States Agency for International Development (USAID), this site covers emergency WASH through the Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA), Bureau for Democracy, Conflict, and Humanitarian Assistance, and the Office of Food for Peace.

ALNAP

The Active Learning Network for Accountability and Performance (ALNAP) is part of the Overseas Development Institute and hosts the largest repository of humanitarian resources, evaluations, and learnings. The Humanitarian Evaluation, Learning and Performance (HELP) library has tens of thousands of documents evaluating all the humanitarian sectors, including assessments of coordination and the overall humanitarian approach.

IRC WASH

IRC is an independent non-governmental organization originally created as an international resource center for community water supply. Currently, the IRC resource library has a scope focused on water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) projects covering development and humanitarian contexts. Several thousand document types can be filtered and searched by location and topic.

WHO (World Health Organization)

The WHO is the lead agency for the Global Health Cluster, covering the clinical and public health needs of disaster-affected populations. In numerous aspects, WASH and health priorities are aligned, as such, the WHO has a collection of technical and policy WASH documents relevant to humanitarian WASH. Specifically, the WHO in partnership with the Water Engineering and Development Centre (WEDC) to create brief technical notes specific to humanitarian WASH activities.

Sphere Handbook

The Sphere Handbook was the first set of international standards for humanitarian response. The Handbook has been updated regularly, with the most recent update in 2018. In addition to outlining the Humanitarian Charter, the Sphere Handbook also defines standards in WASH, food security and nutrition, shelter and settlement settings, and health. Each of these sectors of work is further defined through key activities and indicators which are generally accepted at global minimum standards.

Oxfam

Oxfam is an international NGO working from humanitarian aid to poverty advocacy. Emergency WASH projects have been a focus of Oxfam’s work for decades. A wide range of policy, project innovation, and field research are also well documented by theme and sector and available on their website. 

Save the Children

Save the Children is an international NGO dedicated to response and development of children around the world. Save the Children has an online Resource Centre covering topic from: child protection, child rights governance, health & nutrition, education and child poverty. WASH projects are also a key aspect of Save the Children’s work, often focused to WASH programming for children and WASH in schools. The resource centre can be searched through key words, theme, year, and country.

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF)

Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) is an international NGO focused on emergency response, medical and health-related emergencies, including disease outbreaks. The online resources include medical guidelines and programming for treating disease in under-resourced settings, as well as, field research, and policy initiatives.

Action Contre la Faim (ACF)

Action Contre la Faim (Action Against Hunger) is an international NGO focused on nutrition and food security alongside WASH, health, and other emergency response sectors. Action Contre la Faim’s resources are separated by type, including policies and manuals, program evaluations, publications, and technical surveys.






 

International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC)

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is a collection of organizations at country and international levels. IFRC’s scope of work covers many aspects of humanitarian assistance to development. IFRCs publication and evaluation page can be searched by location, type of disaster, organization, and document type. 

Sustainable Sanitation Alliance (SuSanA)

The Sustainable Sanitation Alliance is an informal collection of organizations with a common vision to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal for sanitation. The ‘Sanitation Library’ has several thousand documents that can be filtered by location, technology, resource type, and language.

Centre for Affordable Water and Sanitation Technology (CAWST)

The Centre for Affordable Water and Sanitation Technology (CAWST) is a Canadian organization and engineering firm dedicated to improving drinking water and sanitation globally through expert training and capacity building. CAWST resource library has more than 3,000 WASH education and training resources, as well as, knowledge bases in household water treatment and specifically biosand filters.

Water, Engineering and Development Centre (WEDC)

Water, Engineering and Development Centre (WEDC) is part of Loughborough University in the United Kingdom. WEDC is an education and research institute with a large library and resource centre including publications, learning materials, illustrations and graphics, as well as, other WASH-related materials. WEDC also has an annual international conference aimed to share information between academia, NGOs, and WASH professionals. Conference papers covering a variety of WASH topics are also published and available from the resource centre.
 

ACAPS

ACAPS is an independent NGO dedicated to providing access to information and resources to humanitarian responders. ACAPS conducts humanitarian analysis, provides technical support, and supports capacity building. The ACAPS library includes assessment reports, general resources, and e-learning modules.

WASH in Healthcare Facilities

WASH in Healthcare Facilities is a website operated by the WHO and UNICEF. The resources include publications, tool kits, training materials, specific case studies, and external links all focused on WASH in healthcare facilities.
 

WASH in Schools

WASH in Schools is a website operated by IRC WASH. Resources are focused to WASH projects in school settings, but also include: case studies, advocacy, and topics such as Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM).

Sanitation and Water for All

Sanitation and Water for All is a partnership between governments and development partners aimed at achieving targets set out by the Sustainable Development Goals. The Tools Portal is a large platform of resources to support WASH development and encourage collaborative behaviors. The tools are focused on WASH ‘software,’ including policies, processes, and techniques that help strengthen the WASH enabling environment. Sector financing, planning and monitoring, capacity development, and cross-cutting topics are also available in the tools portal.

Enhancing Learning & Research for Humanitarian Assistance (ELRHA)

Enhancing Learning & Research for Humanitarian Assistance (ELRHA) is an organization aiming to improve humanitarian outcomes through partnership, research, and innovation. ELRHA has two funding programs in the humanitarian field, Humanitarian Innovation Fund (HIF) and Research for Health in Humanitarian Crises (R2HC). The publications library has several hundred evaluations, gap analyses, and case studies across the scope of humanitarian response.

Humanitarian Library

The Humanitarian Library is a collection of humanitarian documents, as well as, a portal for discussion and knowledge sharing. Thousands of documents can be searched and filtered according to location, disaster, resource type, and topic.  

ReliefWeb Response

ReliefWeb Response (RW Response) is a specialised digital service of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). This service is part of OCHA's commitment to the humanitarian community to ensure that relevant information in a humanitarian emergency is available to facilitate situational understanding and decision-making. It is the next generation of the Humanitarian Response platform.

FSM Toolbox

The FSM toolbox is a web platform with a suite of tools and resources designed to assist and guide anyone interested in undertaking assessments and planning infrastructure improvements.
