Coaching and Mentoring

Coaching

What is it?

The coaching program of the Global WASH Cluster (GWC) operates synergistically with various capacity development and learning approaches, including residential and online training courses, as well as on-the-job training. The coaching aspect specifically focuses on enhancing soft skills and behavioral competencies, such as cultivating influential leadership, building trust, achieving consensus, managing conflicts, negotiation, and more. Standard coaching tools are employed within the program.

For whom?

Coaching can be requested or offered to any member of WASH coordination teams in need of specific support on identified areas of improvement: Cluster/ Sector Coordinators, Information Management Officers, Co-Coordinators at national and sub-national level.

By whom?

The GWC coaching team are members of CAST and FST who were trained by certified coaches from The Forton Group.

How does it work?

  1. To express interest in the coaching program, candidates are encouraged to reach out to the GWC via email at gwchelp@unicef.org. Priority will be given to participants of any face-to-face training organized by GWC.

  1. Coachees may suggest three coaches from the CAST/FST staff members, taking into account factors such as language proficiency and potentially current or previous support interactions. The coach will be assigned based on availabilities.

  1. The coach and coachee will schedule meetings at a mutually agreed frequency, with a recommended interval of 10 days to 2 weeks. The duration of the coaching engagement will span 1 to 3 months, depending on the specific support requirements. While the primary focus should align with the CC or IMO behavioral competencies, coaches may also assist candidates in addressing other issues.

  1. Coachees have the option to include the coaching program in their Performance Evaluation Review (PER)

How do we know it works?

At the beginning of the coaching program, the coachee will complete a brief baseline survey to assess their starting point. A similar survey will be administered at the end of the program to gauge the impact. Furthermore, a satisfaction survey will be conducted at the end of the program.

Important

Please be aware that any information disclosed during the coaching program is treated with utmost confidentiality at all times.

Hi! My name is Mark Buttle. I have been working as a WASH specialist and a Cluster Coordinator long enough to know how poorly responses were coordinated before the clusters were invented! I’m an engineer, but I also understand that WASH outcomes can’t be delivered without excellent hygiene promotion and community involvement, and that a decent Information Manager is any Cluster Coordinator’s “hero”!

While coaching, I try to step back and create a very safe space so that any coachee can find their way to the best solutions, with a little help and support from me.
