Cluster Coordinator – Strategy, Preparedness and Transition Coordinator

Mark Buttle joined the Global WASH Cluster team in 2022, following five years as the WASH Cluster Coordinator in Ukraine, although he started his cluster coordination experience in Gaza (Palestine) in 2009. His wider background is as a WASH specialist with Oxfam, and Concern Worldwide, starting on 1999 during the Kosovo Crisis, and from 2010 to 2016 Mark led the humanitarian WASH sector at Save the Children, advising on WASH responses globally, as well as setting up the Kerrytown Ebola Treatment Centre in Freetown, Sierra Leone).

Mark holds a masters in “Water and Waste Engineering” from the Water, Engineering and Development Centre (WEDC at Loughborough University, UK) and he is the author of Out in the Cold: Emergency Water Supply and Sanitation in Cold Regions (3rd Edition, 2005).

Mark’s 2022 deployments include supporting WASH coordination of the drought response in Somalia and the Horn of Africa, and to support Cholera responses in Lebanon and Northwest Syria.
